A newly formed pressure group, the Draft Saraki Movement (DSM) has handed the Senate President, Bukola Saraki a seven-day ultimatum to declare his readiness to contest for the 2019 presidential election.
It said if the Senate President decline to heed the call, it would be termed a great disservice to the Nigerian people.
The Movement stated that given Saraki’s pedigree and sacrifice in standing with the Nigerian people despite all forms of intimidation , the Senate president’s wealth of experience in public service would be far reaching and deeply appreciated if he brings it to bear on the governance of the nation which today is at a precipice.
The Draft Saraki Movement in a communiqué released after its inaugural meeting in Abuja yesterday and signed by its national coordinator and secretary, Dr Abdallah Maiyaki Anas and Rev Ephraim Egbuojah Japheth respectively, stated that the youthful and rare leadership qualities exhibited by Saraki has not only endeared him to the Nigerian electorate, but gives hope to the common man that with the right President and leader at the helm of affairs in the country, the nation’s quest for security, growth and development would be speedily enhanced, just as will be its pride of place in the international community.
“His sacrifice to keep the nation’s democracy intact despite all manner of intimidation, harassment, onslaught, mudslinging and various acts of humiliation , shows the resilient Nigerian spirit which our founding fathers were known for.
“Clearly, whether in terms of Bills such as the subsidy bills which he raised in his first term in office or his statesmanly condemnation of unwarranted loss of lives across parts of the country, Bukola Saraki has always acted and stood in tandem with the wishes of Nigerians and the electorate.
“Even when laughable charges of armed robbery got tied to him, he has kept his head straight and remained focused, exhibiting rare leadership traits and qualities. It is our belief that with leadership of the nation in his hands, Saraki will produce same magic he used to make Kwara State secured and turned into such remarkable beauty in his eight year sojourn as governor of the state”, the communiqué read.
The Movement called on Nigerians to make 2019 the turning point for national development and recourse , noting that it was unfortunate that a country of about 200 million had allowed mediocrity, incompetence, intolerance , hunger, poverty and outright abuse of the rule of law to become it’s lot.
It said even though efforts at meeting the Senate President directly to appeal to him to contest have not succeeded , it was convinced that it should go ahead in patriotic interest of the nation.
“The movement will be opening registers across the country at national, zonal, state, Local government and ward levels to secure millions of signatures in the next two weeks . This is just as the Movement’s social media campaign has already commenced and Nigerians should therefore, seize the opportunity to engage the Draft Saraki Movement through its Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts (Draftsarakimovement,
@draftsarakimovement and @DSarakimovement) respectively”, the movement stated.
“Except we identify Nigerians whose wealth of experience , service delivery, peaceful tolerance and actions seek to unite and positively affect our nationhood, we will continue to move round in circles – derailing the national project”, the communiqué emphasised.
